Things to know to prepare:

  • The primary care clinic that you select on your sign-up form (Mayo Clinic or Olmsted Medical Center) will administer the vaccine and will bill for your child’s vaccine. If you select the incorrect clinic, you may receive a bill, due to out-of-network charges. Mayo Clinic and Olmsted Medical Center are not responsible for these charges.
  • Private insurance covers the cost of routine vaccines with no out-of-pocket expenses. Minnesota Vaccines for Children program covers these at low or no cost to those that qualify as well.
  • You will get an email reminder for your child’s school flu vaccination the day before his or her scheduled flu vaccination date.
  • If you register online, you will receive a confirmation email for each child you have registered after the registration is completed. If you do not receive a confirmation email for each registered child, please contact the phone number or email listed above.
  • For parents who cannot access the online form, paper sign-up forms are available at the schools in English, Spanish, and Somali.
  • We offer reminder texts for middle/high school students for a limited number of carriers (Alltel, AT&T, Boost Mobile, Cricket, Mint Mobile, Spectrum, Sprint, T-Mobile, US Cellular, Verizon and Virgin Mobile). Data charges may apply. Due to network restrictions, some texts may not be received.
  • Please remind your children the day we come to the school that they are signed up. Have your children wear tops that provide easy access to the upper arm.

Day of preparations:

  • This year in the schools, flu vaccines will be offered as a shot or as a nasal spray (FluMist®) as available.
  • We will offer non-medicated coolant spray and use distractions to ease the pain of the flu shot.
  • Our nurses may provide comfort holds to keep your child safe (just as they do at your clinic).
  • We cannot vaccinate parents, teachers, or preschool children.
  • There are no makeup days, and you may not take your child to a different school to get the vaccine.

Your child will NOT get the flu vaccine at school:

  • If you do not sign up online or turn in the paper form by 11 p.m. on September 13.
  • If you do not answer all the questions or if your answers contain incorrect information.
  • If your child is not at school that day or is at school but is sick with a fever.
  • If your middle or high school child does not come to the vaccination area when called.
  • If your child does not cooperate.
  • If “Nasal spray only” is selected on registration form and nasal spray is not available the day of the clinic.
